Middle School Retention Policy

Hampton City Schools has a new Middle School Promotion Policy. To be promoted from eighth grade, students must demonstrate satisfactory classroom performance in the four core content areas of English, mathematics, history/social science, and science, plus a minimum of one elective course and achiever at the proficient level on the English and mathematics Standards of Learning (SOL) assessments.

Attendance & Discipline

Syms Middle School expects students to maintain good attendance in all classes. The tardy bell to the first class of the day rings at 8:50 a.m. Students are expected to be in class prior to that time, ready to learn. We ask that you review the Rights & Responsibilities Handbook for 2011-12 so you will know the policy.

As you know, students are not to wear their hats or any other headgear in the building. Please talk to your child about taking these items off their head before entering the building. We will take headgear if it is worn in the building and store it in a safe place until parents are able to retrieve it.

Radios, CD players, cameras, etc. are not permitted in school. Middle School students may not bring cell phones to school. Please help us enforce this rule by ensuring that cell phones are kept at home. Cell phones that are taken will only be returned to the parent.

Early Dismissals
We ask that you make every effort to schedule appointments for your student before or after school. If you need to pull your student out of school for an appointment, please send a note with your student to the main office. We will process it and have your student waiting for you in the office. This will enable us to help you without any delays.
